This article is intended for prekindergarten schools seeking to understand more about the requirements for participating in the Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) Program.
To participate in the TEFA Program for prekindergarten, the child must be eligible to receive free prekindergarten through a public or charter school and must also be between the ages of 3 and 5 as of September 1, 2026. Additional details can be found here.
Prekindergarten schools are not limited to serving only prekindergarten children. They may also serve infants and toddlers and/or children in grades Kindergarten through 12. Schools that offer grades 1 through 12 may participate in addition to PreK or K if they are accredited by an organization recognized by the Texas Private School Accreditation Commission or recognized by the Texas Education Agency, and meet the other private school requirements.
Prekindergarten students may participate in a homeschool setting, provided they meet all other requirements to participate in the TEFA program.
Private prekindergarten programs may participate in TEFA if they meet the eligibility requirements in state law found here.
